A question of identity

An uncalled-for ‘battle of biometrics' is seemingly over, with the Union Cabinet allowing the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) to issue Aadhaar numbers to 400 million people, in addition to the 200 million to be enrolled by March this year. The decision ends uncertainty over the future of an ambitious programme to give every Indian resident a unique 12-digit identification number (‘Aadhaar'), linked to the biometric fingerprints-cum-iris profile specific to that individual.
