UP's caste of characters

Elections in India, whether local or national, generate a cacophony of views about identity in general and caste in particular. The discourse on identity has come to be dominated by the state, political parties and their affiliated institutions. The manipulation of specific identities for political expediency is an important issue and is well illustrated by the just-concluded UP elections. Unfortunately, the persistence of such ideas only generates tension and even conflict bet-ween various communities.
