New pay panel spells doom for finances and merit

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has approved the constitution of the seventh central pay commission, which will review the compensation packages for about five million central government employees and three million pensioners. The announcement was made on Wednesday by Finance Minister P Chidambaram in a statement that pointed out that the average time taken by a pay commission to submit its recommendations has been two years. Hence, the recommendations of the seventh central pay commission are likely to be implemented with effect from January 2016.
