Power sector is still gridlocked
Though the generation of power has steadily increased in India in the last few decades, it continues to be a power-deficient country. Peak power deficit has been around 9 per cent of total demand. The latest cconomic survey put the cost of power shortage at 0.4 per cent of the country’s GDP in 2012-13. While Punjab, Rajasthan and Haryana together account for significant agricultural and industrial activity, the region suffers from chronic shortage of electricity, which has a crippling impact on economic activity.
