Sugar cane turns bitter for Akhilesh

Cane crushing usually peaks in the state after Diwali, but this year the crop remains unharvested across the fields of Uttar Pradesh due to the state government's failure to determine the price of cane amid conflicting demands of millers and farmers. With farmers getting increasingly restless and millers clearly telling the government that they will not start the mills unless the State Advised Price (SAP) for cane is moderated to viable levels, the issue could snowball into a major crisis and impact the ruling Samajwadi Party's prospects in next year's Lok Sabha elections.
