The numbers tell a story. There's Rs 2,42,182 crore: the amount locked up in about 230,000 cases pending before the Commissioner of Income Tax (Appeals) —the first stage of appeal—as of March 2012. In two years, that's an increase of about one-fourth in number of income tax cases and amount involved.
