In Karnataka, farmers protest as sugar factories reject govt pricing

The suicide by a cane farmer outside the legislature in Belgaum has once again brought to the fore the close relationship between powerful politicians and sugar factories in Karnataka. The fear that sugar factories in the state, a chunk of which are linked to top politicians, would not honour a government directive of November 23 to pay a minimum of Rs 2,500 for every tonne of cane pushed farmers to protest outside the legislature during which one drank a poisonous substance on Wednesday.
