April-November net direct tax collections increase 14.6%, short of target

India’s net direct tax collections in the eight months ended 30 November rose 14.6% to Rs.3.1 trillion, less than half of the annual budgeted target, according to data released by the government. The collections in the April-November period are significantly short of the Rs.6.68 trillion target for direct tax collections for the full fiscal, an indication that the government may fail to meet its targets, especially that for corporate tax collection, because of slowing economic growth and a low tax base.
