Misallocation in the infrastructure sector is now a threat to banking itself

India’s infrastructure sector has been troubled for quite some time now. The full extent of the crisis is becoming apparent only now, with banks facing increasing difficulties in recovering loans made to the sector. The non-performing assets (NPA) crisis that Indian state-owned banks face today is in large measure the flip side of the unravelling of the infrastructure boom of the past decade.
