Towards one civil code

The Supreme Court's decision that Muslim families can legally adopt a child underlines the principle that personal laws cannot supersede the secular laws of the country. The All India Muslim Personal Law Board, which has objected to the adoption on the ground that Muslim personal laws do not provide for the practice, must give up its opposition and realise that the Muslim community cannot be governed mandatorily by personal laws.
