Politicians began abandoning their stated positions on Sunday and pitching for post-poll alliances in Uttar Pradesh that would have appeared unthinkable just a day earlier, even as the exit polls may have provided merely straws in the wind. Union steel minister and Congress Working Committee member Beni Prasad Verma named as a potential ally the Bahujan Samaj Party, which has been the prime target of congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi's prolonged campaign for its alleged misappropriation of central funds and misgovernance.
