A quadrilateral India-Japan-Australia-US strategic arrangement without alienating China would be a powerful asset in protecting our national interest. The Australian decision to sell uranium to India came as a curtain-raiser to last week’s conference in Kolkata on ‘The Asian Century: Security, Sustainability and Society’. With speakers focussing on ‘A New Security Architecture for Asia’, the two-day event highlighted the challenge for India to carve out an Asian role without alienating China but also without acquiescing in demands that sacrifice its own national interests.
