A solution worse than the problem
The National Food Security Bill (NFSB) is now in Parliament. In all likelihood it will go to the standing committee. However, the Bill has already unleashed a media storm. There is an acrimonious debate on the actual cost of implementing NFSB and its delivery mechanism. Some have even questioned the need for such a law. Concerns about the financial implications should be a settled matter with the government claiming—as part of the financial memorandum with the Bill—to place the cost at only Rs. 13,000 crore extra for the public distribution system (PDS). All other components are already operational and may not require significant financial resources.
