An idea to bank on
For India's 12th five-year Plan, agriculture remains a major concern. It is still the main source of livelihood for 58% of Indians, but 70% of farmers operate under 1 hectare (ha), and are severely resource constrained. The average farm size is 1.06 ha but average area owned is only 0.72 ha per rural household (National Sample Survey Office, 2003). Most farmers own little land and depend on informal leasing of minute plots at high rents, on insecure terms, for short periods.
