The Supreme Court had asked Vodafone to deposit the initially assessed tax amount by way of a Rs. 2,500 crore deposit with the Registry and Rs. 8,500 crore as a bank guarantee. Hearing the company's appeal against the tax demand, the court contended that if there was tax liability, it would be paid by the seller and not the buyer.
