Licence cancellation and its aftermath

On February 2, the honourable Supreme Court of India dealt the Indian telecom sector a body blow. Telecom’s success had perhaps made DoT complacent and it went on to severely compromise principles of fairness and transparency in assignment of licences to favour a small number of select operators in January 2008. The subsequent sale of a few licences and the highly valued bundled spectrum at several times the ‘official’ price, led to investigations of impropriety in the allocation process.
