Time to save the Railways

West Bengal Chief Minister and then Union railways minister Mamata Banerjee had rounded off her last budget speech with the pious hope that “Tough times are now over, and railways will grow from strength to strength from here”. Unfortunately, things have not exactly gone her way this fiscal too. The budget of Indian Railways for 2012-’13 is round the corner, but with hardly an expectation of a financial recovery.
