‘In-principle’ nod to free diesel price

The government on Tuesday reiterated that it had agreed "in-principle" to make the price of diesel market-determined , sparking a volley of protest from the Opposition , which said the decision would trigger a sharp increase in prices. Pressure has been mounting on the government to free diesel prices to help ease the burden of subsidies and shore up public finances but it has dragged its feet on the issue due to fears of a political backlash and stoking inflation.
