Retro amendment to stay; Vodafone must pay: FM

Finance minister Pranab Mukherjee on Tuesday justified the government’s decision to go ahead with a retrospective amendment to the Income Tax Act to tax capital gains on sale of assets in India through indirect transfers abroad. While replying to the discussion on the Finance Bill, 2012, on Tuesday, Mukherjee also made it clear that despite the Supreme Court ruling, telecom major Vodafone would be liable to pay taxes in the country for its 2007 acquisition of a controlling stake in Hutch-Essar.
