BJP missing a leader in Vajpayee mould

With his disarming smile and firm resolve, Atal Bihari Vajpayee pushed through a resolution on Gandhian socialism at Bharatiya Janata Party's first convention, held in Mumbai in 1980. Amid heated debate, Vajpayee, then party president, argued such a resolution would be in line with the political strategy of accepting the leadership of the Gandhian, Jai Prakash Narayan, who blessed the party till he died. Vajpayee succeeded in winning over his reluctant party colleagues, just as he would continue to do later on policy issues as prime minister.
