The Bharat bandh call by NDA and Left parties on Thursday against the petrol price hike evoked a mixed response amid stray incidents of violence in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Bengal and Andhra Pradesh. Senior BJP leaders including Ananth Kumar, Vijay Goel and Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi courted arrest in Delhi while protesting, Shahnawaz Hussain and NDA Convenor Sharad Yadav were taken into custody in Bihar. Left leaders Prakash Karat, AB Bardhan and Sitaram Yechury were detained in Delhi. The previous nation-wide agitation against petrol price hike following a call by the NDA and the Left took place on July 5, 2010.
