By-elections are by no means a dipstick test and can often mislead. Recall UP — the 2007 elections had brought in the first single-party government in decades and Mayawati won most of the subsequent by-elections. Her defeat in the 2012 assembly polls was a shocker. At best, by-elections are episodic, most often won by those parties whose members have died or resigned or, by some technicality, ceased to be members.
