Labour pain: Where have all the farmhands gone in India?

Naresh Talwar looks wistfully at his fields. A farmer for 40 years, his heart is no longer in his profession. "I used to employ 20 farmhands. Today, I make do with one permanent employee," says the man who owns land at Khatima, Uttarakhand. All across the Terai and elsewhere in the country, the same lament is being repeated.
