Flood fury hits 24 lakh in Assam

Assam is no stranger to floods. But this deluge is the worst it has seen in many years. The first wave of floods—from April to Juneclaimed 126 lives. More than 700 animals in Kaziranga National Park and elsewhere have died. Fears of a second wave hitting soon loom large. The annual devastation comes in multiple waves in Assam—three to four—starting from April. According to the state disaster management authority, the floods in June affected almost 24 lakh as 4,540 villages came under water. While the flood fury has abated somewhat, more than 3 lakh are still affected as 550 villages continue to be flooded. The state government has pegged the damage at Rs 11,316 crore.
