Modern retail can put an end to India’s food miseries
Today, in the developed world, there is one shop per 1,000 people whereas in India, there are 15 shops per 1,000. On the face of it, we can feel happy for outgunning the West on this metric of retail density, but the story does not end here. A shop is an interface between production and consumption. Therefore, retail density in a country also signifies how prudently the country addresses consumption needs of the country. If shops were restricted to only selling products that are discretionary, then the debate would not have serious overtones.
