The Samajwadi Party, Left parties and JD(S) asked Prime Minister Manmohan Singh not to allow retail trade to be opened up to foreign direct investment (FDI) any further in the "absence of a wide-ranging consensus" on it. "Political parties across the spectrum are opposed to this move. Many state governments have also stated their opposition.
