Illegal guns aggravate unrest in Assam

WHEN 676 insurgents belonging to seven militant groups surrendered in Assam on January 25, 2012, they did not hand over all their weapons. Though they deposited some 200 weapons including AK-47 rifles and hand-grenades, many kept their weapons with them. A 16-page booklet, Farewell to Arms, Welcome to the Mainstream, circulated during the surrender ceremony, noted that a large number of weapons in Assam remained with the former militants and private militia who saw the gun as a symbol of power.
