Emus don’t take flight

The latest scam to hit Tamil Nadu has to do with the Australian bird Emu. In the western districts of the state, Emu farming suddenly became the flavour of the season around 2006. The first big farm, Susi Emu Farms, was set up in 2006, and introduced a buy-back scheme promising fabulous returns. By putting in R1.5 lakh, the investor got three pairs of emu chicks, facilities to rear the birds, money for maintenance and a bonus.
