Both the US and India need to see the back of political brinkmanship
With Barack Obama re-elected, there's no change at the White House. But it's hoped there's change on Capitol Hill. Last year, partisan politics jammed Congress over raising the US's debt ceiling. Recall the shock downgrade of America's triple-A credit rating, courtesy doubts about its ability to politically manage economic challenges. The US can't afford a repeat. It faces a fiscal cliff: a $600 billion combination of tax hikes and spending cuts that'll kick in January 1 onwards should Obama fail to strike a pact with Republicans to hold it off.
