Atrocity upon atrocity

The public spat that has erupted between Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and Union Minister for Home Affairs Sushil Kumar Shinde, over the police investigation into the gang rape that rocked the national capital last week, is a telling example of how terribly the authorities have responded to the crisis. Ms Dikshit's supposedly top-secret letter to Mr Shinde, that came to the fore on Tuesday, complaining of “interference” by senior police officials in the recording of the 23-year-old victim's statement, shows that even when handling a high-profile and hugely sensitive case such as this, the police and its political bosses have failed to get their act together.
