Given the growing clamour for providing speedy justice to victims of sexual harassment, through various means such as fast-track courts, the news that the Supreme Court of India had sat over a plea by a rape victim for as long as eight years, comes as a huge shock. The 16-year-old gang rape victim had filed a petition in the apex court in 2005, against the acquittal of 35 of her tormentors, some of whom were high ranking officials and even politicians, by the Kerala High Court.
