Scrap coal monopoly
The strong pitch made by Montek Singh Ahluwalia, deputy chairman of the Planning Commission, for allowing private competition in the coal sector comes not a day too soon. Domestic coal supplies have increasingly been falling short of requirements. Coal India, which accounts for four-fifth of national production and holds monopoly rights for distribution of coal in the open market, has been unable to meet requirements as pace of supply has dropped to less than half of the demand.
