It is a matter of irony that dynastic succession will coexist with and, in fact, be a trigger for, inner party elections in the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). Party patriarch Karunanidhi named younger son Stalin as his successor, only to rile elder son Alagiri. Sibling rivalry will now ensure that organisational elections in the DMK are keenly fought.
