Saving the Railways

It had to happen, even if the timing might not have been the most appropriate. On Wednesday, the Rail Minister, Pawan Kumar Bansal, announced a hike in passenger fares covering even ordinary and sleeper class commuters for the first time since 2002-03. Having waited for more than a decade, it is legitimate to ask why the Minister couldn’t have waited for another one-and-a-half months for the next Rail Budget to be presented.
