The Supreme Court's verdict this past Friday categorically establishing the primacy of the Chief Minister in choosing candidates for Lokayuktas and Upalokayuktas, should have effectively settled a contentious issue and rightly upheld the supremacy of an elected Government in such appointments. The ruling opens the doors for the Gujarat Government to approach the very same apex court seeking reconsideration of a recent verdict by the latter that the Chief Justice of the High Court had primacy in the appointment of Lokayuktas.
