Between being targeted by the might of an apparently illogical state and the ire of self-righteous sections of society all too ready to take umbrage, the whole notion of freedom of expression is under assault, repeatedly. The FIR against reputed social theorist Ashis Nandy — coming after a film was taken off screens in some southern states despite clearance by the Central Board of Film Certification, in addition to earlier cases of arrests of individuals for social media comments — is the latest instance of India turning into an illiberal, intimidated republic.
