Research at a standstill

Today marks three years since the then Environment Minister, Jairam Ramesh, declared a ‘moratorium’ on the release of Bt brinjal for commercial cultivation. Considering that brinjal is a food crop and this would have been the first ever genetically modified (GM) vegetable to be introduced globally, there was at least some basis for the Minister to invoke the ‘precautionary’ principle in denying clearance, even if available scientific evidence pointed to no harmful effects from it on human health or the lager environment.
