Vinod Rai has done well to redefine CAG’s role
At a time when the steel frame of bureaucracy that was once designed to bind together the Indian state is rusting and rotting away, one would expect that the Government would wholeheartedly welcome the efforts of one of its top babus to inject some life into the system. But instead of cheering Comptroller and Auditor-General Vinod Rai for taking the initiative to actively participate in the “business of upgrading governance as any other agency in the administration” is expected to do, the Government has threatened him to stay within his proverbial lakshman rekha. Such a strong response from the Government is, of course, not entirely surprising.
