Backseat flying
The democratisation of air travel has been one of the most potent signifiers of the Indian economy's global emergence. But aviation minister Ajit Singh seems to feel that the aviation sector is best ruled by fiat, just as it was in the pre-liberalisation era when the government ruled the skies. His latest diktat - that IndiGo will be allowed to import only five planes when the company had wanted 16 - smacks of high-handedness and is illogical to boot.
