Pointless strike
The rejection of the prime minister's appeal to call off the countrywide strike, called by the major trade unions on February 20 and 21, is unwarranted and deplorable. A general strike will inflict big losses on the economy, already reeling under the impact of a severe slowdown, besides causing inconvenience to the general public. It would suspend emergency health services and rob millions of workers in the unorganised sector the opportunity of earning the daily wages on which they subsist.
