India: Adrift in the Maldives

A wave of optimism swept Mohammad Nasheed to power in the Maldives when it held its first multi-party direct presidential poll in November 2008. Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, the incumbent Nasheed defeated, had claimed 90%-plus majorities in previous one candidate referendums held under tight government control, lengthening his dictatorship to 30 years.
