There are better ways of taxing ‘conspicuous consumption’ than by increasing the service tax on restaurants.One of the great mysteries of the budget exercise is the undiminished faith finance ministers have in the power of taxing people for exercising their right to unwind after a day spent hoarding water, suffering power outages, negotiating chaotic traffic and suffering the incompetence of our bureaucratic behemoth.
