Competition body gets it right on coal
The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has found that Coal India, the state-owned coal monopoly, abuses its dominance, after state-owned power generators of Maharashtra and Gujarat complained about erratic and poorquality supplies. This represents the first step of what could pick up speed into a great leap forward for three things: institutionalised regulation of competition and fair trade in the country, the power sector and public sector reform. Indian coal has high ash content.
