Dubious tactics

For close to three decades, the Congress strained every nerve to deflect attention from the alleged role of three of its leaders in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots — H K L Bhagat, Jagdish Tytler and Sajjan Kumar — with overweening cynicism and bravado. The former two were even given berths in the Union cabinet. Bhagat died in the intervening years. A verdict on Sajjan Kumar is expected shortly. On Wednesday, a sessions court in Delhi ordered the CBI to reopen the case against Tytler.
