Hubris, they say, is contagious. And both Congress and the BJP seem to have been infected in the past weeks. It is no secret that every government since 1989 has been a coalition. Regimes that started as a pre-paid alliance—particularly the UPA—had to find and fund post-paid subscribers to survive. Yet, this reality failed to inoculate the national parties as they chorused their poster boys. It was as if all that mattered was the star on the marquee; allies were not part of the cast or the script.
