Seeking coal comfort
On April 23, Parliament's standing committee on coal and steel submitted its report on allotment of coal and lignite blocks. Assailing the policy of subjectively awarding coal blocks to end-users such as power and steel companies, the committee pointed out production had begun in only 30 of 195 coal blocks allocated between 1993 and 2008. A vast majority of these coal blocks - 160 - were allocated by the UPA government between 2004 and 2008. Production has begun in only two.
