Fewer and better
For a country where agriculture is seen as a ‘way of life’, it is disconcerting, at first sight, to find the number of farmers registering a decline between 2001 and 2011. The fall, from 10.36 crore to 9.58 crore, is by no means dramatic. But more so, it isn’t a bad trend at all and is, perhaps, actually good for Indian agriculture in the long run.
