Two years ago, thousands lined up along the road leading from Raj Bhavan in Kolkata to Writers' Building to cheer a leader who had vowed to change Bengal. That image—of a diminutive woman in a crinkled sari and slippers, hair in a dishevelled bun, walking down to take over as the Chief Minister of West Bengal—had inspired a surge of hope and expectation not seen for a long time in the state.
