Year of the long knives?

On Wednesday, 15 May, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh finally took that flight to Guwahati to file his nomination for the Rajya Sabha elections. Once the formalities are over, he will begin his fifth term as an MP from Assam, and is assured of a seat in the Upper House till at least 2019. Accompanying Manmohan on the plane to Guwahati was Digvijaya Singh, the most powerful of the Congress’ general secretaries and the partyman in charge of Assam.
