Bellwether bypolls: Modi sweeps Gujarat, Nitish and Mamata have plenty to ponder

No simple conclusions can be derived from the results of the recent byelections. Nevertheless, by leading the BJP's byelection victory in Gujarat, Narendra Modi has served notice — on his own party's central leadership as well as the Congress. Most notably, in case of the BJP's clean sweep of two Lok Sabha and four assembly seats in Gujarat, the assembly seats were all held by the Congress before. Modi will now undoubtedly become more assertive in his claim to be the BJP's prime ministerial candidate, and the decks may be stacked in his favour.
